Product Description

The John Deere S140 Riding Lawn Tractor combines a powerful V-Twin gasoline engine, a wide 48-inch cutting deck, and simple hydrostatic controls for dependable residential lawn maintenance. It is designed for homeowners who want to cover medium to large lawns efficiently while retaining the familiar steering and stability of a traditional lawn tractor.

Power comes from a 22 HP, 724cc V-Twin overhead-valve engine. The two-cylinder configuration provides smooth power delivery and dependable torque when cutting thick grass, operating across gently changing terrain, or pulling approved lawn-care attachments. Full-pressure lubrication and a replaceable oil filter help protect internal engine components during regular operation.

A no-tools oil-drain system simplifies routine engine servicing. The engine also features air cooling, a mechanical governor, electronic starting, and a cartridge-style air cleaner. Its single-lever throttle and choke control includes a spring-return choke function to help prevent the engine from being operated with the choke unintentionally engaged.

The S140 features a 48-inch Edge™ mower deck, allowing it to cover a wider strip of grass with every pass than 42-inch lawn tractors. The stamped-steel deck uses three mower blades and is shaped to promote airflow, lift grass, and distribute clippings evenly during side-discharge mowing.

The deck can support three lawn-care methods:

  • Side discharge with the standard chute
  • Mulching with compatible optional equipment
  • Grass collection with a compatible rear bagger

Cutting height can be adjusted to suit different grass types, weather conditions, and preferred lawn appearance. A spring-assisted hand-grip lever reduces the effort required to raise or lower the deck, while adjustable deck wheels help reduce scalping over mild terrain changes.

An electric power take-off system lets the operator engage or disengage the mower blades using a dashboard-mounted control rather than a manual engagement lever. This provides convenient blade operation when moving between mowing areas or crossing non-grass surfaces.

The tractor uses a hydrostatic, two-wheel-drive transmission with side-by-side forward and reverse pedals. Travel speed and direction can be controlled without manual gear changes, allowing the operator to keep both hands on the steering wheel while maneuvering around trees, flower beds, walkways, fences, and other obstacles.

Maximum travel speeds reach approximately 5.5 MPH forward and 3.2 MPH in reverse. An internal wet-disc braking system provides controlled stopping, while cooling fins and a transmission fan help manage operating temperatures.

The operator station includes a 15-inch cut-and-sewn seat with approximately 5.5 inches of fore-and-aft adjustment. Its wide foot platform, conveniently positioned controls, open seating area, and traditional steering wheel provide a comfortable and familiar operating layout.

Two standard LED headlights improve visibility during early-morning, evening, or low-light operation. A digital hour meter helps track engine use and plan maintenance, while the mechanical fuel gauge can be viewed from the operator’s seat.

The rear-mounted 2.4-gallon fuel tank has a centrally positioned fill opening for easier refueling. Other conveniences include a cup holder, storage compartment, standard front bumper, and built-in rear hitch point for compatible tow-behind accessories.

The John Deere S140 can perform more than routine mowing when equipped with approved attachments. Compatible accessories may include grass baggers, mulch kits, utility carts, spreaders, lawn sweepers, aerators, dethatchers, snow-removal equipment, and weather enclosures. Attachment compatibility and availability can vary by region and model year.

As part of the John Deere 100 Series, the S140 is assembled in Tennessee and includes a two-year or 120-hour bumper-to-bumper limited warranty, whichever limit is reached first.
